Fight Night: Mall Grab | Sat 17 Mar | Hare & Hounds | Waiting List
Mall Grab has outlived the low-fi house trend that made his name – the crunchy, clipped beats and analogue synths, the emotional, vaporwave-y nostalgia. While these elements still comprise much of his arsenal, the man from down under has proved himself to be far more than just this. His sets as well as his original productions now feature elements of uplifting disco, understated techno and squelchy acid, all coming together in an eclectic melting pot of styles. 2017 was a big year for Mall Grab, and he’s kicking off 2018 with a headline tour of the UK. 99 Flake Launch Party | Tue 13 Mar | Lab11 | £6
The eagerly anticipated relaunch of 99 Flake has been in the works for some time now, and the big day is nearly upon us. This sugar-sweet disco, house and soul night attracted quite a following last time round, and as a cheap and cheerful mid-week outing, it’s pretty much tailor-made for Birmingham’s party-hard student population. It’s not entirely clear what’s changed since the brand underwent a ‘facelift’ other than its home venue, and it’s not clear whether there will still be ice cream served on site, but the team do promise some ‘added extras’. Probably E numbers. www.skiddle.com
David Rodigan’s 40th Anniversary | Fri 16 Mar | Boxxed | £22
Reggae and dancehall old-timer David Rodigan (MBE) returns to Birmingham to celebrate 40 years in broadcasting and disc jockeying, bringing with him a heavyweight line-up sure to knock you off your feet. Drum & bass don Shy FX is main support alongside the genre-defying DJ Zinc, joined by experienced selectors Randall and Papa Face. There’ll even be a bit of time travelling taking place, with Zinc and Randall dipping into their Pensieve to unearth some near-forgotten gems of jungle and bass music yesteryear. www.skiddle.com
Moho & Tektu Takeover | Sat 17 Mar | Spotlight & Mama Roux’s | from £4.50
Moschino Hoe, Versace Hottie and Tektu join forces to take over Spotlight and Mama Roux’s. One room of house, garage and tech; one room of hip hop and R&B. Throw up gun fingers, shuffle yourself to a standstill; bop to the boom bap beats, pop your body to the tunes… Sounds like the best of both worlds to our ears. www.theticketsellers.co.uk
