Quite literally smokin’ hot off the press comes yet another ace Moseley indie, the gloriously titled Starfish & Coffee – yes that’s a Prince reference right there. Not only will they be serving up super-bad super fairtrade beans (Sumatran women’s cooperative, no starfish hurt in the making of), the clever team behind the new double-fronted unit will be utilising the wood-fired oven used by the last occupiers to make their dream of a Moseley Smokehouse come true. With the home-spun bakery and cafe opening to the public imminently, the restaurant and smokehouse will follow. Chef Guy Ward will be heading up the kitchen with partner Lesley Main focusing on hospitality and that badass brew. The lovely laidback interior is already shaping up nicely with a freshly created graffiti feature and cosy, informal corners to savour everything from traditional baked goods (fresh from the oven) to artisan muesli/granola & porridge to fresh takes on traditional breakfast fare like bacon butties and boutique eggs. Seasonal flavours will inspire soups, salad bowls and, intriguingly, Cuban sandwiches. Hailing from South Africa and Scotland, these two well-travelled foodies already know a thing about ‘good fusion’ and aren’t afraid of some serious genre-bending action in the name of nailing a good dish down. You’ll likely find us in the cafe waiting out the arrival of the much-anticipated smoked fish, brisket and pulled pork with accompanying baked breads like chapati and naans; all smoked using traditional methods.

Starfish & Coffee opens Mon 24 Jul. 4A Woodbridge Rd, Birmingham B13 8EJ, www.starfishcoffee.co.uk
