Carnival Magnifico | Sat 2 June | B5 Arena | from £24.75
Kaleidoscopic summer shindig Carnival Magnifico is back with more of the good stuff: tunes, fireworks and confetti. It’s the biggest rave on the student social calendar, the last blow-out before the end of term, the start of summer… This is Carnival’s flagship event: a spectacle like no other featuring a live set from ska and roots reggae outfit Gentleman’s Dub Club, two hours of virtuoso disco DJing from Crazy P, a tour de force of unruly reggae and bashment from Klose One – and much more. And the Carnival team have just announced that the event will be moving from Boxxed to the epic B5 Arena, making this one that little bit more special. See our feature here. www.skiddle.com
Fight Night: DJ Seinfeld + Project Pablo | Sat 2 June | Hare & Hounds | from £11
Lo-fi fuzz producer and decksmith DJ Seinfeld is riding the same wave surfed by contemporaries Mall Grab and Ross from Friends, but he’s resolute in his refusal to be pigeonholed, pushing his music ever forward into new rough-edged, unpolished territory. It’s clear from his moniker that Seinfeld doesn’t take himself too seriously, but just seriously enough to write one of 2016’s most poignant tracks – ‘U’, which famously featured a sample of Bob Geldof discussing his painful divorce from former wife Paula. Performing alongside Seinfeld is Project Pablo, a Montreal-based DJ who makes breezy, upbeat low-fi house replete with disco elements, quirky synth leads and bright keyboard melodies. Off the Cuff: Jasper James | Fri 1 June | Lab11 | from £14
At under 30 years old, Jasper James is still pretty young in DJing terms, but he’s notched up a fair few years of experience in the industry since being taught to spin the decks by his dad when he was just 13. He now holds the accolade of being the youngest DJ ever to perform at Glasgow’s legendary Sub Club, and he was named DJ Mag’s Best Breakthrough DJ back in 2015. No doubt his youth is an asset when performing his infamous marathon sets, which can last for in excess of six hours – but make no mistake: James is known for his quality as much as sheer quantity.
