The utterly sublime Nozstock Hidden Valley festival returns this year with a line-up that does perfect justice to its reputation as the musically vibrant bucolic ‘fresh face’ of the festival circuit. This year’s guests gracing the gorgeous glades and rolling-hills location include the legendary Seasick Steve (still ‘fresh’ from last year’s headlining SSE Arena Wembley gig), Sugarhill Gang, Krafty Kuts & MC Dynamite, The Happy Mondays, Hazard & Eskman, Delta Heavy, Goldie Lookin’ Chain, General Levy & plenty more. Keeping it firmly in the surreal camp Nozstock offers an utterly enchanting adventure in sound and experience with countless hidden depths to discover beyond the music, all neatly nestled in the heart of Herefordshire. Curated by the (vaguely familiar) father and daughter duo of Noz and Ella and born out of an extended family barbecue 19 years ago, there’s a special charm and energy to this award-winning festival (shortlisted more than any other in the UK Festival Awards and proud owner of a Greener Festival Award). Musically there’s an eclectic mix of old and new, from drum and bass to dub, gypsy funk to rap with reggae by day, house by night and a heavy sway towards urban beats and breaks, dance music and DJs plus plenty of spaces to lose yourself in. Among the myriad of discoveries on offer there’s also circus, comedy, outdoor cinema, cabaret, super cosy camping and a jazz lounge. A small, laidback crowd (around 5,000) encourages the super child-friendly feel, with kids gaining free entry and access to the ‘Little Wonderland’ full of circus skills, archery etc while their parents get musically lost in a wooded glade a few metres down the hill. Non-commercial, traditional yet modern, cutting edge and cosily all-inclusive, wild, free and super chilled out, Nozstock wears its ‘just like festivals used to be’ badge with well-earned pride.
