We can comfortably say we never expected to be heralding the reunion of mid-noughties what-the-fuck-core band The Number Twelve Looks Like You, but here we are: New Jersey’s weirdest are back, having supported Dillinger Escape Plan on their outgoing Limerent Death tour. The group’s brain-grinding mixture of Japanese grindcore-noise and screamo in the vein of the mighty Circle Takes the Square was arguably a gateway for some of the most genre-bending metal bands of today, from Rolo Tomassi, to the Fall of Troy, to Deafheaven. The creepifying blend of relentless thrashing and spidery clean guitars that make up 2007’s ‘Nuclear. Sad. Nuclear’ is the band at their best, but don’t be expecting any greatest hits set: with a group this unhinged, expectations are sheer folly. And time signatures are for amateurs.
