Hidden up an unassuming set of stairs in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter, you’ll unearth some of the city’s best and most innovative drinks creations.
Lucky 7, which comes from Wood & Liquor, the team behind concepts like Koba-Ko, 670 Grams and Land Restaurant, has been inspired by East Asian Izakaya culture. With just a handful of tables, it’s an intimate, delightfully moody and seriously stylish setting, illuminated by lashings of neon and soundtracked by low-key hip-hop classics.
The menu conveniently meanders from light and refreshing cocktails to stronger, complex numbers, all of which expertly incorporate a variety of Asian ingredients ranging from wasabi and pandan to aged soy and Okinawan black sugar. Each creation comes with a story that the team is more than happy to enthusiastically share, and is prepared with meticulous precision, ensuring aesthetics are just as impressive as taste.
Elsewhere, there’s a curated selection of sake to work through, including a couple of variations that the team have brewed themselves. The two house styles we tried were excellent, serving as a perfect entry point for anyone who may be unfamiliar with the rice wine drink. You even get to choose the ‘vessel’ from which you drink, each of which has been accumulated over years’ worth of travelling.
Along with the cocktails, there’s also a short menu of Asian-inspired bar snacks, which includes a much-lauded portion of golden fried chicken, inspired by the kind you can grab way into the early hours from Lawson convenience stores in Japan.
Equally as enticing as the ludicrously good drinks is the warm welcome and wonderful service. Robert & Kyndra are genuine masters of their craft, and while the standards are insanely high, there is very much a casual, all-are-welcome feel to the place, and we could have happily stuck around and chatted for hours.
