“The fact is that we’re here and now,” We Are Scientists sing on this year’s ‘Megaplex’; and they might be as surprised at that fact as anyone else. Not that there’s anything wrong with the duo’s hook-heavy, radio-ready pop-rock; but the indie kids who burst out the gate with ‘This Scene is Dead’ in 2006 – back when Bloc Party were the hot new thing – have outlived a helluva lot of their peers, and they’re still knocking out highly honed, glossily euphoric choruses that barely waste a minute. Luckily, if you’ve missed some of those intervening years, ‘Megaplex’ is an easy place to drop right back in – it’s a concentrated version of what they do best, veering between the grandeur of the Walkmen and the saturated blast of a Friendly Fires chorus. Remember them? That’s not to say the band hasn’t grown up since the noughties – but there’s an appealing time-capsule charm to We Are Scientists: changing with the times, while still believing in the purity of a good ol’ indie-rock riff.
