Whoever said revenge is ‘sweet’ clearly never feasted their eyes upon the deliciously depraved, raw and provocatively pertinent piece of performance art that is Medea, Written in Rage. A re-telling of the ancient Greek tale, this startling, contemporary re-imagining of the revenge classic casts Medea as the ultimate outsider, motivated by unhinged dislocation as much as passion and revenge. Her weaving monologue transports us from ancient Greece to modern Europe and back again in a moving, blood-soaked amalgamation of performance, song and sexual confession. Dancer and performer François Testory fuses his extraordinary physicality and unique androgynous stage presence to bring to life the murderous Medea in this evocative lament. The scene set is modern; dry ice, a mic and a bank of speakers, the music carefully curated, even the costumes are high couture, but this is no ordinary revenge, this is timeless, beautiful, iconic.
