Razor-sharp garage blues band Little Barrie write undeniably catchy, surf-tinged rock songs, replete with buzzing amps, bombastic tom rolls and a death-stare seriousness: if it’s possible to imagine the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in a sombre mood, they might come close to Little Barrie’s stormy retro rock. While the band can boast some high-profile friends from Paul Weller to the Stone Roses, they’re still the garage rock scene’s dirty secret, hidden under a rock somewhere in the desert. But with the band’s fifth record ‘Death Express’ out now – a behemoth of sauntering blues hooks, off-kilter rock jams and propulsive Krautrock flecked nuggets – the group keeps relentlessly tightening its sound, quietly getting better and better. Well, not quietly. Shake your blues loose at the Actress and Bishop.
