The wild proto-funk of the Hot 8 Brass Band is the real deal: home-cooked jazz and marching band hip-hop from the heart of New Orleans, unique and defiant since 1995. Regulars at nightclubs, parades, funerals and festivals in their hometown, the fluid collective of blazing brass instruments bring an anarchic energy to everything they do, be it jazz standards, marches, original tunes or sassy Sade covers. Following a sold-out show at London’s Roundhouse, the band are on an extensive UK jaunt; you can take the band outta Louisiana, but they carry with them the chaos and exuberance, lament and resilience in New Orleans’ soul. We doubt Birmingham’s Institute has ever experienced a full brass carnival on this scale before – let the rumbling sousaphones rouse your feet, the percussion move your hands and the cat-calling saxophones warp your brain until you’re totally convinced you’re dancing on hot tarmac in a Mardi Gras chorus line.
