The sight of Bronx frontman Matt Caughthran, head shaved, veins popping, muscling his way into a crowd as he screams with a guttural roar, is not something you forget in a hurry. The Los Angeles hardcore punk gang are still going strong, still self-titling all their albums, still releasing genuine mariachi band music as ‘Mariachi El Bronx’ – still the rough-and-ready last punks in town, amps cranked, cymbals breaking, fingers bleeding. The band’s fifth album, ‘The Bronx’ – or ‘BRVNX’, if you like – keeps up the pace, the breakneck spirit of their early albums still firmly in place, the abject fury pouring out of Caughthran’s lungs, along with the subtler melodic side that has been slow-cooking in the background of the band’s career. A Bronx show is a place to get sweaty, to scream in the face of whatever bogeyman haunts you at night; a place to throw all the world’s ills into a pit, set the thing on fire, and have a party on the ashes. Fifteen years into this game and these legends of the live stage still give it everything they’ve got – book your tickets fast, because their reputation precedes them.
