To a certain generation of music fans the mere mention of Joyce Sims will bring back the kind of memories that stitch together the musical fabric of who we are and the tastes we developed. Heady flashbacks to scuffing your new Dunlop Greenflash on the youth club disco dancefloor, perfecting your localised waist-up moves, pimping your soul casuals look with a ‘wide leg’ denim panel and eschewing your mum and dad’s suddenly hyper-uncool record collection to buy picture disc vinyl of your favourite soul icons with your pocket money. Luther Vandross, The SOS Band, Chaka Khan (headlining Moseley JFS this year, see here) and Nu Shooz – this was the 80’s soundtrack that formed so many fledgling tastes. Celebrating the 30 year anniversary of her hit track ‘Come Into My Life’, the New York Singer Songwriter will be in Birmingham for one intimate night only at the Hare & Hounds. Sims’ sound is still referenced on the dancefloor and the video below highlights the almost immediate connection to today’s cultural and fashion references so expect a mixed crowd of music lovers. We should also be there giving it our somewhat senior ‘all and all’.
