Qujaku | Wed 22 Aug | Hare & Hounds | £11
A bewitching and melodious alchemy of sonic insanity as pile driving riffs that could’ve been driven by the great Iommi himself are matched with blissful vocal interludes and swirls of sweeping psychedelic sounds, almost heavy metal shoegaze. The Japanese band took the roof off the Sunflower Lounge last time they visited Birmingham, expect more of the same this time round. www.skiddle.com
Al Raseef | Thu 23 Aug | Centrala | £10 otd
Forged in the city of Ramallah in the West Bank of Palestine, Al Raseef created a dynamic buzz performing in the streets with their unique blend of Arabic and Balkan beats. Brian Wilson | Fri 24 Aug | Digbeth Arena | £49.40
Not only is the absolute legend Brian Wilson stopping by Digbeth this week he will be performing the classic Beach Boys record Pet Sounds in its entirety. The bands eleventh studio album has been hailed as one of the most influential in musical history and it was written almost exclusively by Wilson who was trying to create “the greatest rock album ever made”, no arguments there. A wilfully inventive work of genius from an artist who redefined popular music in his own vision, as Wilson himself sings “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times”. www.seetickets.com
Rhino & The Ranters | Sat 25 Aug | Hare & Hounds | £11
If you were thinking of having a nice calm August bank holiday then our advice would be to steer well clear of the Hare & Hounds. The city’s most renowned musical party animals and sartorial legends Rhino and The Ranters will be whipping up a frenzy of barnstorming cow punk noise, attitude and energy. Drown in a swamp of sludge fuelled rock and roll laced with a good naturedly abrasive demeanour, think punk rock hoedown. Check out our full preview here.
The Mothers Earth Experiment | Sun 26 Aug | Night Owl | £9
Kaleidoscope and Planet Art Project collide for a bank holiday culture feast starring prog-rock six-piece The Mothers Earth Experiment, the band are Zappa to the core, from their geeky funk-rock grooves, to their dense psychedelic atmospheres and their unabashed ecological proselytising. ‘Cool Down Mama’ is a case in point, clean licks, bellbottom-tight grooves, bongo jams and straight-up freaky breakdowns. An eclectic line up is completed by Dead Coast, The Americas, Brain Food, NonSuch and As Mamas, with a raft of DJs keeping the beats pumping all night and several local artists exhibiting their work, Monday will be a culture comedown. ww2.theticketsellers.co.uk
Lifest | Sun 26 Aug | Actress & Bishop | £5.50
Why spend a fortune and travel miles to camp in a muddy field when you can enjoy a festival in a pub for a fiver without leaving the city. Live music featuring local rabble rousers The Cracked Actors, Northern Brit poppers The Kavaliers and experimental noiseniks Dead Summers. Throw in street food from Big Daddies Diner and Nati’s Thai Kitchen, fancy dress, vintage stalls and a silent disco, it’s like Glasto but without the crappy toilets, queuing and eye watering ticket prices. ww2.theticketsellers.co.uk
