TOY | Tue 22 Nov | The Rainbow | £12.10
Brighton’s sons of psychedelica return in support of their third album, Clear Shot: their first release since performing as Natasha Khan’s Sexwitch band. It’s a direct and earthy record by TOY standards: a raft made of Echo and the Bunnymen guitars, lashed together with Robert Smith melodies, sailing perilously across a Felt-inspired shoegaze swamp. It’s a raucous and gloomily gothic racket; and if you think music peaked in 1985 you’ll be in raptures. See our full preview here.
Rodney P presents Yesterday, Today, Forever | Thu 24 Nov | Hare & Hounds | £7
Rodney P, a pioneer of hip-hop since the 1980s, descends to the Hare & Hounds to present the UK’s past, present and future through a curated night of performances. Performing alongside boom-bap stalwart TY, grime chameleon Iman Rootz and the neo-soul futurists Children of Zeus, the breadth of styles and depth of talent mean you’re all but guaranteed to get exposed to something new and ear-catching. Wolf People | Thu 24 Nov | Sunflower Lounge | £11
Wolf People are true folk artists: story-tellers, tapping into the superstitions of British mythology with an unassuming curiosity; but the music is far from the moniker, surrounding the folk tales with a sweaty, psychedelic whirlpool of buzzing guitars. There’s touches of a far less histrionic Led Zeppelin in there, as well as the influences of labelmates Unknown Mortal Orchestra or Dinosaur Jr.; and the dark, muddy production of new album Ruins only serves to deepen their mystique and enhance their magic. Well worth catching in such an intimate space. See our full preview here.
Future of the Left | Sat 26 Nov | The Flapper | £12
Future of the Left are an unhealthily savage blow to the gut; all pithy quips from a blackened heart and high-calorie riffs dragged backwards through a 90s modem. Having seemingly discovered the unassailable joy in being angry, FOTL blast through their killer back-catalogue with tongue firmly in cheek. Raw slabs of meat aren’t to everyone’s taste, but for the initiated, this is gourmet flesh. See our full preview here.
