M-1 and stic.man of rap group dead prez (yes, keepin’ it all lower case) promote two revolutionary ideologies: socialist, pro-Black politics and a seriously healthy (and sometime vegan) lifestyle. While not well known on these shores, they first notably appeared in the Michel Gondry-directed Dave Chappelle’s Block Party documentary in 2005, which also featured a just-getting-famous Kayne West. Their live performances are intense, especially their anthemic ‘Bigger Than Hip-Hop’ – a rhetoric of rage and righteous indignation, yet we get the sense that when they come to gig for the first time in Birmingham they’ll just quietly ask to be taken to the Bullring Open Market to stock up on fruit and veg for their aftershow superfood smoothies.Their sonic landscape has changed a lot since their debut album ‘Let’s Get Free’. Expect good vibes punctuated with confrontational moments, and lots of pure spring drinking water.
