Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley are the stuff of indie filmmakers’ dreams: two New Yorkers straight out of art school, who fell in love and formed a band in the mid-eighties; a band who became a cult success, a critic’s favourite, and bonafide ‘contenders’ with their late-nineties masterpiece, ‘I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One’. Although Kaplan and Hubley aren’t alone in the band, their marriage sustains and shapes the group, providing much of its heart, as well as their knack for telepathic synchronicity. The feedback-drenched jams and fuzzed-out singalongs of those nineties days have gradually shrunk down into something more focused, and altogether more intimate; but Yo La Tengo have always worn their hearts on their sleeves, always been the likeable, approachable, everyday kids. Thirty-plus years on, they’re still inspiring similar-minded artists, still catering to their fans, still in love with everything and each other. Art-rock godfathers, humble legends, don’t miss the celebrated trio at Birmingham Town Hall.
