Wiley’s last record, ‘Godfather’, found him embracing his long-held nickname as the godfather of grime: one of the original architects of the sound, and the one-time mentor of both Dizzee Rascal and Skepta, graciously handing over production duties to young upstarts of the genre and keeping his legacy alive. That album was announced as Wiley’s final swansong (not for the first time) – but not too surprisingly, a new February tour heralds the release of Wiley’s twelfth album to date, called, yes, ‘Godfather II’. But as the most tireless producer in the scene, Wiley’s earned as long a victory lap as he wants, with his double-time rapping and harsh, synthy beats still delivering the same energy and drive with charisma aplenty: as the man says, he calls the shots. His protegés have built grime into a chart-stealing new branch of pop across the world stage, but Wiley’s done everything he can to stay elemental and vital at his craft: letting the new stars make the big pop hits and just doing what he does best.
