For those in the know, Canada’s twin-sister pop duo Tegan and Sara were soundtracking summer romances and bitter heartbreak with their folksy whine back in the early 2000s. After the transitional years of Chris Walla’s ethanol-clean indie production (2007’s The Con an obvious highlight), their transformation into synth-pop guilty pleasures finally puts them into the big leagues alongside the likes of Taylor Swift and Ellie Goulding. This year’s Love You to Death continues the arc; their usual introspection and doubt underpinned by punchy synths and huge, ‘In the Air Tonight’ snares. Some will definitely yearn for the nuance and rough edges of their old incarnations, but the twins have stayed true to themselves throughout, and few would begrudge them their well-earned moment in the sun.
