Original members Andrew Eldritch and Doktor Avalanche might not like it but Sisters of Mercy are about as goth as it’s possible to get. They were pioneers of the original eighties goth wave mixing dark imagery and moody vocals over a menacing rock template. With eyeliner, hairspray and dry ice in spades, they produced some of the genre’s most successful and memorable anthems with releases such as ‘Temple of Love’ and ‘Body Electric’. We can remember seeing them on Top of the Pops. Placed in a live only limbo by the temperamental Eldritch after he went on strike and refused to release any new recorded material for Time Warner in 1994, the band have still not released anything to this day despite performing new songs live. Doktor Avalanche is a drum machine by the way.
