The multi-faceted, virtuoso pianist Robert Glasper makes well-worn genre boundaries look like nothing but chalk dust. After years of making effortlessly complex, flowing jazz, Glasper revitalised the Soulquarian-tinged neo-soul sound with 2012’s Grammy-winning Black Radio, and followed it up by connecting the dots between jazz and trap on this year’s ArtScience. Hip-hop artists from Common and Kweli to Odd Future have been incorporating jazz elements for years, but Glasper makes the leap in reverse, dragging the jazz world into a realm of fresh ideas. And as a credit to his forward-thinking credentials, Glasper was tapped early on to flesh out the sound of Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. In a career full of head-spinning highlights, the Robert Glasper Experiment is where Glasper lets loose, which makes this show – part of Birmingham’s BASS Festival – a must-see for pretty much anyone with a soul.
