Dreamy, retrofuturist pop delivered with an irresistible but subversive charm: that would be Gwenno Saunders, the sultry electronic songstress who wooed many a heart with 2015’s ‘Y Dydd Olaf’ – produced by producer-husband Rhys Edwards and, yes, sung almost entirely in Welsh. If that wasn’t enough to win you over, this year’s upcoming album ‘Le Kov’ is written entirely in Cornish – in which Gwenno is also fluent – and like ‘Y Dydd Olaf’ before it, it promises to be a deeply story-driven, conceptual journey. And like Janelle Monae’s high-concept albums or, indeed, Super Furry Animals fuzzy freakouts, you don’t have to follow the whole thing to enjoy it; Gwenno’s soft, soothing bath of sound – sensual, dreamy, and bubbly – belies the urgency underneath. But push through the layer of aural fog, and you’ll find much more going on: a hard-edged treatise on the protection of minority languages and cultures, the precious variety of life under threat in our isolationist age. Give Gwenno a chance to sneak inside your ears and your brain, and pretty soon she’ll be tugging the strings of your heart.
