Seattle’s indie-rock darlings Band of Horses returned to form this year on their fifth album Why Are You OK – with enough of the same charm offensive and dreamy, reverb-laden hooks to lift the spirits of anyone enduring the long wait for the next Shins album. Since their 2007 breakout, Cease to Begin, Ben Bridewell and co. haven’t altered their formula too much – that Southern rock sound will never go out of fashion – but like their godfathers the Walkmen, they keep finding different ways to approach it. Why Are You OK finds them in a thoughtful, generous space; their rootsy, organic noise still aiming straight for the heartstrings and reaching out to those who want to connect. With the immersive psychedelic-country soundscapes of Israel Nash announced as support, this is how we’ll be surviving February.
