Montreal’s Arcade Fire are, finally, a household name, after a long but meteoric rise from the chest-thumping, awkward-kid indie euphoria of ‘Funeral’ to the stadium-filling, coffee-table electro-funk of 2017’s ‘Everything Now’. The band no longer play the kinds of venues where they can stare the audience in the eyes and hear their heart-on-sleeve words shouted back at them, but like U2 or Flaming Lips, they keep striving to make an arena feel personal and communal – whether that’s a tongue-in-cheek mandatory dress code, setlists that honour their early days, or of course, a man covered in mirrors dancing in the middle of the crowd, who may or may not be frontman Win Butler. In twenty years time we’ll be watching talking-head retrospectives about the process, but for now, we’ve got Genting Arena.
