Legendary feminist folk-punk icon Ani DiFranco heralds the arrival of her new album ‘Binary’ with an appearance at Birmingham Town Hall. In case you need reminding, DiFranco has been an unstoppable DIY force for 30 years, often fiercely unfashionable, shamelessly honest, and never short of prolific. Like Tori Amos, Kate Bush or Rachelle Ferrell, her jazz-tinged, explorative folk lives in a subculture outside of time itself – constantly evolving, but on a completely different plane to mainstream trends. Never one to shy away from political activity, DiFranco was deeply engaged with last year’s US election and January’s Women’s March; unsurprisingly, ‘Binary’ is a rallying cry to pacifism, empathy and connectivity, turning her considerable talents to the challenge of bringing together a broken people. A rare UK appearance, and one of only 4 shows DiFranco is playing in the UK: buy tickets while you still can.
