Running alongside the Birmingham Weekender this year, Fluid Festival promises weekend of almost entirely free new queer sound and music of unmissable proportions. kicking off with Fluid Conversations on Sat 23 Sep, an open conversation with queer composers about what it truly means to be queer and composing music today, Rolf Hind, Rebekah Ubuntu, Michael Wolters, Henry McPherson and C N Lester will be joined by author of ‘David Bowie Made Me Gay’ Darryl W Bullock to discuss how the sexuality and gender identity of composers influences their music. Is there such a thing as a Queer sensibility? The discussion will take place at Birmingham Town Hall and tickets are free but limited so book early.
Fluid at Minerva works also on 23 Sep at 3pm & 10.30pm, offers our undisputed champion of this year’s events though. Quickly becoming the go-to space for the Birmingham art crowd and a welcoming place to experience new things, Minerva Works, consisting of VIVID, Grand Union, Centrala, Stryx and the Nicholson School of Dance is the perfect backdrop for what’s in store. Matmos (beamed in from the US), Repeator and Rebekah Ubuntu are just some of the acts that will take center stage in VIVID Projects and Nicholson School of Dance, whilst Stryx will be open to a whole host of music making workshops including Leo Fransico, James Lawrence Slattery and China Dethcrash For the full line up, see here: Entry is only available with a festival pass, £15 purchase from here.
And to get you through the day after the night before, the ingenious Fluid Brunch on Sun 24 Sep 12pm – 3pm at Eden Bar in the heart of Birmingham’s Gay Village is a free and friendly event supplying Vegan Brunches from £5. We’ll take two. With performances from FUKC_BOI, C N Lester, Tsinder Ash, and Daniel Vs The World. We’re already picking out our outfits out to complement the dance moves.
Fri 22 Sep – Sun 24 Sep at various venues.
