Just when we thought second-city cinema couldn’t get any better up pops this late summer gem of a festival from the UK’s oldest, and let’s not split hairs here, best working movie emporium. The Electric Cinema has curated a whole weekend of wild and wonderfully family-friendly film and screen-related shenanigans outdoors, out in the sticks, that will enthral and delight lovers of the big screen. Sixteen films across three days, ranging from the populist, the original Harry Potter, to the sublime, Harold Lloyd silent stuntathon Safety Last. We’re also beside ourselves with excitement to pay homage to the late Adam West in the greatest Batman film ever made, tights and shark-repellent spray at the ready. However, Flickerama is about more than just the films. Across the weekend there’s a cinematic cornucopia of celluloid magic, including exhibitions, Quidditch tournament, movie mini-golf, food art from Conjurers Kitchen, circus performers, creative gaming, competitions and an incredible opportunity to sit in the real Ghostbusters car. Friday opens with dark puppet fest Labyrinth followed by an adults-only masquerade ball, replete with themed cocktails. Cosplay is encouraged throughout the weekend. The Electric is even running a shuttle bus from its Birmingham home to the event throughout the weekend so you can take advantage of the waiter-service bar. To the Batmoblile, let’s go.
