The huge cultural empire of Birmingham continues to expand its glorious borders with the arrival of the Verve Poetry Festival. A four day celebration of this wonderful city by poets and spoken word artists incorporating readings, performances, workshops, theatre and a literary glut of imaginative events. All events will take place at Waterstones’ beautifully refurbished city centre store, what a perfect venue to overdose on literary magic. It all kicks off with the established Poetry Parlour event, a chance for local poets to shine followed by a Q&A and reading from Punglish poet Daljit Nagra. We’re especially looking forward to the Dice Slam, with performance poetry heroes Apples and Pears, hosted by our very own Amerah Saleh. There are some incredible events over the weekend including workshops with Katrina Naomi and Kim Moore, masterclasses from Anthony Anaxagorou and Sabrina Mahfouz, children’s activities including the delightful sounding Little Tyke open mic, and some of the region’s best talents with Helen Calcutt and Jasmine Gardosi performing. Many of the events are free but booking is still required as space is limited. Weekend passes are available for £35. Free the expression Birmingham.
