They may live on a steady diet of time signatures, but don’t mistake Three Trapped Tigers for simple math-rock nerds. The London three-piece formed in 2007 as a means of performing Aphex Twin-style IDM on live instruments; in the nine years since, they’ve streamlined their sound into the ultimate combination of brain and brawn, leaving genres and adjectives in their wake. Adam Betts’ utterly inhuman drumming is the engine that catapults them beyond the boundaries of noisy prog and into the realms of stratospheric, hair-raising hooks. It’s a brute cannonball of organic, experimental noise-rock – somewhere between Battles and Brian Eno – charged with gutsy sci-fi synths and effect-drenched guitar. Listen to ‘Cramm’ from their 2011 debut and let’s just agree there’s no-one quite like them.
