It’s official – the one-time pop-punkers Paramore have now transitioned into full pop, ditching the grunge riffs of yesteryear for neon-bright, new wave hooks. The group’s 2017 effort ‘After Laughter’ found them wearing their new 80s-tinted digs and looking thoroughly comfortable in them: using the crisp, peppy sounds as a fun foil against lyrics that introspectively explore the rough along with the smooth. With the return of powerhouse drummer Zac Farro, Paramore are at a new career peak: embracing the candy-coated sounds of Cyndi Lauper with an outsider’s eye in much the same way that other pop phenomenons like Grimes and Sky Ferreira might, and with a deep musical fluency that makes the whole thing look easy. Of course, hearing some ‘Riot’-era classics will be totally welcome too, but Paramore are doing a pretty good job showing how mid-noughties emo can grow up into something maturer and fuller.
