The curmudgeonly former Smith has fostered a unique career as a media baiting contrarian during his self imposed exile from the Northern grimness he has practically canonised in his music. More likely to receive exposure for his views than his music these days there is no denying the slavish power of his adoring fanbase. New album Low in High School keeps the engine of Morrissey’s usual motifs casually ticking over without breaking any new ground. Opening single Spent the Day in Bed is the standout track with Morrissey teasing the world pre-release with his first ever tweet saying simply, spent the day in bed. Agonising genius or pompous twerp? Either way the Morrissey circus is always worth a peek.
