One of Birmingham’s greatest son’s, Jeff Lynne’s influence on popular music cannot be overestimated, once dubbed ‘defiantly anti-cool’ the legacy of Lynne and ELO can be found in a disparate array of contemporary musicians from Super Furry Animals, Flaming Lips, Daft Punk and a multitude of others. Their melding of sci-fi iconography, pop anthems and classical music was unique for the early seventies and continues to enthral. Originally formed with another local legend, Roy Wood of The Move who left in 1972 to focus on Wizzard, Lynne and fellow founding member Richard Tandy continue to create great music, check out 2015’s Alone In the Universe, it’s excellent. As a city we don’t crow about our rich musical heritage enough, we’re up there with anywhere else. Now excuse us while we celebrate big hair and one the best songs of the seventies, Mr. Blue Sky.
