Birmingham is really establishing itself as a cultural hotbed of cinema. One festival ends, the stunning Birmingham on Film, Cine-Excess arrives and then we have the Behind the Curtain festival just round the corner, exciting times. Cine-Excess is hosted by Birmingham University over three days and brings together scholars, critics and academics for talks, interviews and screenings. The Mockingbird and the University itself will be hosting six exclusive films. There are UK premieres for Tax Shelter Terrors, All Girls Weekend and Kill Or Be Killed. Also screening are Sherzo Diabolico, Honeymoon and the movie we’re really excited to see, Luciano Onetti’s splatter epic Francesca. Amongst several topics lined up for expert discussion throughout the conference are the films of John Carpenter and Grindhouse cinema. Director Jake West will be judging ‘found footage’ short films produced by students and there is a ‘Film Ripped Open’ contest in which students are invited to test their skills as horror critics. There is a lot going on and we recommend you book events early.
