Magic Door’s 5th Birthday | Fri 6 Oct | LAB11 | £19.80
We’re not sure how it’s possible, but on their fifth birthday expect Magic Door to up the ante with yet more glitter, glitz and glamour. It’s an operation as covert as Berghain – no one really knows what’s going to go down when the costumed crew roll into the labyrinth that is LAB11 this Friday, but expect excess and extravagance in extra quantities to usual. As ever, the Magic Door formula of quirky, warm house and disco will be delivered by residents Maxxi Soundsystem, Jukes of Hazard and Mr Doris, as well as a host of secret guest DJs to be revealed on the night. For details on how to win two tickets to this event, check out our competition herewww.ticketgorilla.co.uk

Joy Orbison, Scuba + Objekt | Fri 6 Oct | Rainbow | from £8.80
Springing into the spotlight with the forward-thinking, organ-led dubstep of ‘Hyph Mngo’ back in 2009, Joy Orbison has garnered a reputation for both his dissolving of genre boundaries and his unique DJ sets. Scuba’s synthesised sounds are similarly idiosyncratic – introspective, claustrophobic and percussive in equal measure, a listen to his back-catalogue is a lesson in sonic evolution. And experimental techno enigma Objekt is much from the same mould, frequently delving deep into his tool box of tricks to produce scatterbrained songs from the shape-shifting soundscapes of dubstep and beyond. Athletico: Greg Wilson | Fri 6 Oct | Hare & Hounds | £11
Once upon a time – 1994 to be exact – the first ever Athletico event was held at the Custard Factory in Digbeth. Since then, Athletico has hosted acts such as Basement Jaxx, Grandmaster Flash, the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim… and now Greg Wilson. Wilson is a true OG of electronic music, a scene stalwart and mixing pioneer who held a weekly residency at Manchester’s Haçienda night club back in the ‘80s. You’ll struggle to find a selector more experienced, more dedicated to his craft. This is your chance to see a master at work. See our feature here. www.hareandhoundskingsheath.com

02.31’s 6th Birthday | Sat 7 Oct | Crane | from £33
It’s a week of birthday celebrations, and this one comes with a stacked line-up starring selectors such as Redlight, My Nu Leng and Preditah. If you’re familiar with 02.31, you’ll know to expect an emphasis on bass, but you might be less prepared for Mr Whippies and alcoholic ice lollies to join the sea of gun fingers raised to the skies. Yep, ice cream will be on sale, and if you haven’t checked out new venue Crane yet, this is your chance. www.skiddle.com
