Portal: Claude VonStroke | Fri 27 Apr | Lab11 | from £16.50
The cheerful beardster is back with an abundance of bouncy house tunes and enough deep bass to keep you funkin’ until the early hours of the morning. This masterclass in mixing is brought to you by Portal, who have teamed up with newbie Reykjavik festival Secret Solstice to put on a bumper-scale rave sure to sate your fervid dance cravings. As festivals goes, Secret Solstice is exceptionally diverse, though this particular event has a decidedly house and techno focus, with DJs Franky Rizardo, De La Swing, Paradox City and Rothstein all playing their respective takes on the genres across three rooms. Tekno Disco: Paradise Garage | Sat 28 Apr | Hare & Hounds | from £3.50
This week Tekno Disco are taking it back to the 1980s, to New York City, to the original ‘garage’, way before the advent of choppy two-step, silky smooth R&B vocals and skanking. This is where it all began, where disco metamorphosed into a pounding, four-to-the-floor format and dance floors playing electronic music gained reputations as safe spaces for people of all walks of life to hang out and have fun, most notably the LGBT community. Unencumbered by societal convention, the oppressed are so often the innovators, and the LGBT attendees of Paradise Garage were the prime movers in bringing that quintessential disco-house sound to the masses. Doing his best to recreate those halcyon days is DJ Greg Alldis, who will be joined by an as-yet-unannounced line-up. www.skiddle.com
Tropical Soundclash | Sat 28 Apr | Hare & Hounds | Free before 10pm
Picture yourself on a beach in Jamaica, the Bahamas, Kokomo – wherever – tropical drink melting in your hand, turquoise sea dappled in orange sunlight… Now imagine the same scene with Afrobeats, Latin, house, broken beat and bass music disturbing the peace (in the best possible way!). This is the essence of Tropical Soundclash, a night taking place a fair few miles from Jamaica at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath. On selection duties Anthony Dennis joins resident DJ Sam Redmore, while live percussion will be provided by the Mighty Magoo. Get your lilos blown up and ready for this one. www.skiddle.com
Zen Free Party | Sat 28 Apr | Suki10c | Free
Peep the oneness, the brahman, the non-dual nature of the universe at this house and techno event hosted by Suki10c – no meditation, psychedelics or any of that new-age nonsense needed. And we’re not materialistic but money is important (in the physical realm at least), so the fact that this is free is a bonus.
