Reflect Launch Party | Fri 12 Jan | Monastery | from £7
Brand new party brand Reflect calls itself a ‘movement’, and its manifesto is simple: to provide an affordable night out for Birmingham’s underground music lovers, and to give the city’s up-and-coming selectors a platform to show off their skills. This particular event marks the University of Birmingham Underground Music Society’s first foray into the world of clubbing, and it’s looking likely to be a huge success. Well, why shouldn’t it be? All the ingredients are right: a booming Void Acoustics sound system, a suitably edgy venue and, more importantly, some of the most exciting music making waves in sonic subterranea right now. Speaking of which, the main room will host an urban concoction of garage, grime and drum and bass, while room 2 will feature grooves from the lands of disco, house and techno. Bad Practice 2nd Birthday: Peza | Sat 13 Jan | Hare & Hounds | from £7
A labour of love from house and disco brand Bad Practice on their second birthday. Headline act Peza has performed with some truly world class acts during his two decades in the biz, from Aphex Twin to 808 State, and while not achieving the same mainstream recognition as these acts, he’s been a champion of underground nu-disco from day one. Famed for his dark, acid-inspired re-edits, Peza has developed a unique, exciting live set using mainly analog hardware – all the better to carve out his signature deep, funky grooves. He’s currently working with acid house legend Greg Wilson, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with. Brummie veteran Jock Lee joins proceedings alongside Coloré’s Steffan Taylor. With only 100 spaces available, tickets will be like gold dust to this one. www.skiddle.com
