Turn on, tune in and drop out: this psychedelic happening of trippy visuals and incisive political commentary comes from the mind of British playwright Leo Butler. In 2015, Butler took part in the world’s first LSD trials since the 1960s, conducted by former government advisor David Nutt. What followed was nothing short of enlightening. In All You Need is LSD, we are taken on a wild ride through both Butler’s psyche and hippie counterculture past, stopping off along the way to dip into the far-out tales of experienced trippers such as Aldous Huxley, the Beatles and Steve Jobs. Through a fantastical history of this mind-boggling compound, All You Need is LSD raises important questions around the austere drug laws prohibiting LSD’s use, as well as shining a technicolour torchlight on the very essence of what it means to be free.
