Since her stunning break through album ‘Dreamland’ Madeline has been a huge part of the contemporary jazz landscape. Vocals that recall Billie Holiday at her most soulful and bluesey seem somehow perfectly adrift in the confusion of the twenty first century. A welcome nod to simpler times. Latest album ‘Secular Hymns’ sees Madeline put her singular jazzy spin on some of her favourite songs from artists as diverse as Jacques Brel, Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandt. Stand out for us is a beautiful rendition of Lee Dorsey’s ‘Everything I Do Gohn Be Funky’. Recorded in one day in a twelfth century Oxfordshire church with regular guitarist Jon Herington and bassist Barak Mori we’re excited to see it recreated amidst the beguiling acoustics of the Town Hall. Highly recommended.
