It surely can’t be nearly forty years since the pop punk phenomena from Osaka, Japan, Shonen Knife, exploded into the musicverse in a blitz of tight Ramones-esque bubblegum fireworks? The all girl trio, featuring the Yamano sisters Naoko and Atsuko, became alternative rock darlings by third album ‘Pretty Little Baka Guy’ with Kurt Cobain and Thurston Moore championing their stripped down fluorescent neon style and an army of their peers, including L7, Red Kross and Government Issue, contributed cover versions of favourite Shonen Knife songs to the 1989 compilation ‘Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them’. The Yamano’s are still going strong and the ‘Cotton Candy Clouds’ of latest album, 2016’s ‘Adventure’, are as strong as ever.
