Before his days as an arena-filling folk singer-songwriter, Hampshire’s Frank Turner cut his teeth in the cult hardcore band Million Dead – with a penchant for wild-eyed, political fury and a ‘Get in the Van’ Black Flag-idolising DIY aesthetic. We won’t be seeing a Million Dead reunion any time soon, but Turner and drummer Ben Dawson have kept the hardcore dream alive with the part-time punk outfit Möngöl Hörde, an even more raw and stripped-back take on the heavy sound they once pioneered, completed by the teeth-grinding riff work of guitarist Matt Nasir. Möngöl Hörde live sets are a rare thing, and a moment for Turner – and the rest of us – to let off some steam with some tongue-in-cheek, semi-nihilistic rants and some intense blast beats. With Turner busy releasing retrospectives of his acoustic work, the time is ripe for him to let out the dark side.
