You’d never guess exmagician duo Danny Todd and James Smith were from Belfast. The dreamy and affirming psychedelia of latest album ‘Scan the Blue’ summons images of West Coast America, classic indie and sunshine with its trippy stroll through an eclectic hotbed of influences. There’s an almost lazy but beguiling indifference at play in songs like ‘Feet Don’t Fail’ and ‘Smile to the Gallery’ that then gives way to the sludge heavy riff of ‘The Rot Sets In’. They are a duo full of surprises though, breaking up the well received Cashier No. 9 after just one successful album to spread their creative wings further. Listening to exmagician is like watching a really cool 60’s film and they’re the soundtrack, something like Psych-Out or Blow Up. Their beautifully melodious cacophony of uplifting psychedelic swirl is highly recommended. Support comes from Coventry’s lofi indie band Callum Pickard & The Third Look and Midlands based pop rockers Jump the Shark.
