One of the most enduring big screen love stories is that chance encounter at Carnforth railway station between Trevor Howard’s Alec and prim housewife Laura, played with clipped stiffness by Celia Johnson. Just what would have happened had Celia not got that bit of grit in her eye? Emma Rice’s stage adaptation of Noel Coward’s play has been touring the world since originally opening at The Rep, including successful runs in the West End and Broadway. The Kneehigh Theatre Company capture perfectly the uniquely English flavour and setting of the film in this production. We actually think Alec is a bit of a cad who engineered the whole thing. See what you think.
