Birmingham Royal Ballet taps into the city’s world-famous musical history as it brings Black Sabbath – The Ballet to Birmingham Hippodrome.
Touching down this September, audiences can expect a theatrical evening packed with thrilling dance alongside full orchestrations of legendary Black Sabbath tracks inlcuding Paranoid and Iron man, as well as brand-new orchestral pieces inspired by the group.
The show, which returns following a wildly successful world premiere in 2023, marks the second of three Birmingham-focussed commissions. Birmingham Royal Ballet director Carlos Acosta says he was drawn to both the band’s work and its musical legacy as the originators of Heavy Metal.
This full-evening ballet promises to be a truly unique experience shaped by three composers and three choreographers, led by renowned Choreographer Pontus Lidberg (whose work has been performed by the Swedish Royal Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet) and Composer Chris Austin (whose work includes orchestrating the White Stripes music for Wayne McGregor’s Chroma) working alongside award-winning writer Richard Thomas (Jerry Springer, The Opera).
Described as an ‘extraordinary metal symphony’ the perforamnce will be spread over three acts and Black Sabbath themselves have been closely involved in developing the unique collaboration.
In exceptionaly timely fashion, Black Sabbath have just announced details of their final ever live show, which comes to Birmingham’s Villa Park this summer.
