Rapper and writer Testament combines his substantial talents to create an eloquent and lyrical piece of theatre dedicated to tackling issues such as self-identity, displacement and race. It’s an important play within a wider movement ‘Revolution Mix’, dedicated to increasing the number of Black British stories told across the country. In Black Men Walking three friends, Thomas, GP Matthew and Richard commence their stroll through the hilly, outstretched landscape of the Peak District and delve into the tricky terrain of their cultural past. They come across rapper Ayeesha on their travels, a young black woman who has come to the hills as a place of refuge far away from the racial slurs that tarnish society. Testament’s play uses powerful, poetic language to voice the concerns of black identity today. With a streak of humour and hope, Black Men Walking promises to be brutally honest and nothing short of captivating.
