Pianist Stan Tracey was a legendary figure in the British jazz scene in a career spanning six decades and was a past honorary president of Birmingham Jazz. As part of Birmingham Jazz’ celebration of forty years promoting music across the city a range of activities are being organised of which this is the centrepiece. Stan was a huge influence on his peers and recorded what has often been celebrated as the greatest UK jazz record of all time, ‘Jazz Suite Inspired by Dylan Thomas’ “Under Milk Wood” released in 1965. Featuring members of the last octet ensemble with Steve Melling on piano, they will perform compositions from various suites, including a selection of Stan’s later music as well as his earlier output.
