Finding their feet on uber-indie Brooklyn label Captured Tracks, Beach Fossils came of age alongside Mac DeMarco, Wavves, and a host of other lo-fi, chillwave bands who launched a whole new era of DIY romanticism: creating bedroom-produced indie rock on a shoestring budget, and letting Soundcloud take care of the rest. While DeMarco and DIIV successfully leap-frogged to greater things, Beach Fossils fell quiet: this year’s new album ‘Somersault’ changes that, a freshly-honed take on the dream-pop sound. While band leader Dustin Payseur is still whispering lyrics like Kevin Shields and strumming jangly chords like Johnny Marr, the album swamps his songs with orchestral flourishes, smart production and a quagmire of Beach Boys-infused psychedelia. Deeper, darker and better than ever, Beach Fossils have left their origins behind for greater things: come witness the change at the Hare & Hounds.
