Katie Mulgrew and Ian Lane | Fri 4 Aug | Cherry Reds | £7
Superb double header for the Cherry Bomb comedy club which you’ll find upstairs at the John Bright Street branch of Cherry Reds. Katie Mulgrew brings Northern charm and a down to earth homeliness to her comedy that is fresh and engaging. If that voice sounds familiar you may have heard it narrating BBC Radio 2’s The History of British Comedy. Completing the bill is arch surrealist Ian Lane whose wistful flights of fancy come armed with some killer punch lines. www.theticketsellers.co.uk

Mercedes Benson and Maureen Younger | Wed 9 Aug | Kitchen Garden Cafe | £8.80
An evening of the best local female comics is headlined by queen of the chav’s Mercedes Benson, the alter ego of Black Country actress and writer Gemma Layton. Be sure to wear your best trackie. Host for the event is the fearless Maureen Younger, the lovely KGC is very cosy so be careful where you sit, there aren’t many hiding places. New female comics are welcome to perform, get in touch with Maureen herewww.wegottickets.com

Comedy Club 4 Kids | Sat 12 Aug | mac | £3.50
Comedy Club 4 Kids have been curating quality family friendly comedy events since 2005 featuring some of the most talented comics around. There are still plenty of laughs to be had minus the rude bits and kids can be the most daring and imaginative of hecklers. Headlining is a familiar face from children’s TV and one half of The Johnny & Inel Show; Inel Tomlinson, there’s discount improv from Comedy Checkout and everything is mc’d by professional idiot and duffel coat wearer Danny Pensive. macbirmingham.co.uk

Sean Sellers | Wed 16 Aug | Patrick Kavanaghs | Free
Googling tonight’s headline act could possibly fill you with dread but rest assured, the Sean Sellers rocking up at Pat Kavs tonight is not the US satanist murderer, though I’m sure he’d know a few good gags too. Possessed of an encyclopaedic knowledge of the world’s other Sean Sellers’, the American comic’s anxious patter is an edgy delight live. www.facebook.com

Dave Hill | Fri 18 Aug & Sat 19 Aug | Glee Club | £19.95
One of the better Glee Club bills with US comic Dave Hill worth the entrance fee alone. The multi-talented writer, comic, composer and hard rock guitarist exudes an affable likeability that lend his absurdist and playful romps a sharp comedic resonance, we like Hill that much we’ll probably go both nights. Also appearing are Dave Twentyman and Andre Vincent. www.glee.co.uk

Kate McCabe | Wed 23 Aug | Patrick Kavanaghs | Free
Coming to Birmingham with a ringing endorsement from our colleagues over at Manchester Wire is Mancunian New Yorker Kate McCabe. An improv expert with a neat line in self-deprecating gags McCabe is an enthralling stand up drawing on personal experience to raise big laughs, they know a thing or two about comedy over at Manchester Wire. House improv team Bunkum Factory will be putting in a laugh shift along with Andrew Thayer. www.facebook.com

Jarred Christmas | Sat 26 Aug | 6 on Broad Street | £11
A familiar face on TV panel shows such as Mock the Week and 8 Out of Ten Cats the likeable Kiwi with the killer sideburns is a bundle of crackerjack energy live, rarely staying on script he is at his most hilariously efficient when in full rant mode. Of course his greatest achievement, and one of which we are sure he is most proud in a career ripe with highlights, is being in the Doner Kebab Pot Noodle TV advert. Jarred would be enough for us but remarkably there are another three comics on the bill; Ian Cognito, Andrew Bird and Roger Monkhouse. www.thecomedyloft.co.uk

Marshall B Anderson | Wed 30 Aug | Patrick Kavanaghs | Free
If you enjoy listening to cantankerous old men spewing forth on the iniquities of modern life then your dreams have come true with Marshall B Anderson. With an hilariously wizened assault on just about anything, the self-confessed angry old man of comedy will have you nodding along and even wringing your hands in comedic despair. As usual the Bunkum Factory improvvers and Andrew Thayer will provide warm up laughs. www.facebook.com
