London singer-producer duo Alpines show a cool and understated front, but dig past and there’s plenty going on beneath the surface. Like Devotion-era Jessie Ware, Alpines inject some much-needed colour into the best modern R&B tropes; delivering some satisfyingly speaker-busting pop soundscapes, and even indulging in some honest-to-God slowjams. The production barely puts a step wrong: well-versed in the Hundred Waters playbook, it simmers beautifully, waiting for the right moment to surge unexpectedly into the foreground. At their best when they’re most approachable and human, catch Alpines in the cosy confines of Hare & Hounds for an indulgently polished pop experience.
