An acclaimed stage adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption is set to return to Birmingham next year.
Based on Stephen King’s 1982 masterpiece, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards, the thrilling production examines friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum-security facility.
Coming to The Alexandra from Tue 26 May – Sat 30 May, Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns have adapted the original film for the stage. Joe McFadden stars in the role of the wrongly convicted Andy Dufresne, while Ben Onwukwe takes the role of Ellis ‘Red’ Redding, and Bill Ward plays corrupt prison warden Stammas.
Joe McFadden’s numerous television credits include PC Joe Mason in Heartbeat, Raf in Holby City and, of course, winning the 2017 series of Strictly Come Dancing. Theatre credits include 2:22 A Ghost Story, The Rocky Horror Show and Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Crack’d.
Ben Onwukwe boasts a 30-year stage career, including leading roles with the RSC and the Royal Court, and eleven years on TV as Recall McKenzie in London’s Burning.
Bill Ward is best known for his long-running performances as Charlie Stubbs in Coronation Street and James Barton in Emmerdale, but most recently he has been baring all as Gerald in the UK tour of The Full Monty.
