A new independent food market and bakery is set to open its doors in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter this weekend.

Alterna says it will focus on plant-based diets and sustainably sourced products, and that its offering is loosely inspired by South American and American influences.

The venue will operate as both a market and an ‘intimate bakery’, with the team also offering catering. The market will source an array of independent produce, craft and drinks, promising to showcase ‘affordable and accessible items.’

On the bakery side of things, a cosy ground floor space will feature a handful of tables should guests want to eat in, with takeout also available. The menu includes things like empanadas, falafel salad, burritos, bagels and even Sunday roasts, while coffee will come from specialist roasters Conscious.

Alterna’s bakery will open to the public on Fri 13 Sep, with the upstairs shop to follow in a few weeks. Stay up to date with the team’s progress on Instagram here.
