Audiences are invited to see through the eyes of an astronaut as Bafta and Emmy-nominated composer Ilan Eshkeri brings a stunning new audio-visual spectacle to Birmingham this summer.

Space Station Earth explores how seeing Earth from space reshapes human perspective. Coming to Birmingham Town Hall on Fri 5 Jun, the evening will see Eshkeri’s album performed live on synthesisers with orchestra and choir, unfolding as a continuous musical work that moves from moments of near-stillness to overwhelming scale.

The concert is presented alongside a film written and directed by Eshkeri, created from footage captured by astronauts aboard the International Space Station and imagery filmed at European Space Agency locations.

Projected across three large-scale screens, the film unfolds in dialogue with the music, framing the band and orchestra and extending the music’s sense of scale and emotion, moving between vast planetary imagery and moments of intimate detail.

The work engages with the Overview Effect — the profound shift in perception that comes from seeing Earth from space — allowing this perspective to be encountered through the unfolding of the music.

Eshkeri’s work spans concert music, film, television, video games, dance, and theatre. His large-scale concert works have been presented at venues including the Royal Albert Hall and the Louvre.
